Beating the Winter Blues

I was just in Michigan for the weekend, and the temperature was in the teens. After living in South Florida for two decades, I forgot how cold – cold really is. When we get cold, the body contracts.

According to Chinese medicine, winter is related to the kidneys and the emotion is fear. It’s the time of the year when cold and dark is prevalent. It feels rather lonely to people who are living in the cold. But, there’s a trick to reverse it.

The way to get out of the winter blues is to bundle up and get outside. Every day when I was in Michigan, I took a brisk walk and absorbed all the beauty of the frozen lakes and the bare trees. The positive side of the kidneys is gentleness – being gentle with yourself.

Spring will be here before you know it. This is the time of year that we need more sleep. Your exercise program should include more internal activities using yoga, tai chi and qi gong. Every day when I was in Michigan, when I walked out to the lake, you could almost hear the silence. Winter is a time for contemplation and meditation. It’s a time to internalize your thoughts and calm down.

Tomorrow, I’m giving a free lecture on holistic health at my office located at 2390 NE 186th St., Miami, FL 33180. During the class, I’ll be discussing different meditations, internal exercises and ways that you can balance your energy during the winter season and much more.

We start at 7 pm. Call the office now at 305-407-0120 to reserve your spot.
