Longevity

If you took away someone’s food they would starve to death in about a month. If you take away their water, they will only last a week at the most, but if there is no Oxygen, you are lucky if you last for a few minutes even!

Breath is the key to Longevity, but also the key to Longevity is multi-fold. There is no pill, no fast or exercise that will keep you in your body longer, but there are many practices that will help to keep you alive longer and healthier. Number one, you have to discipline yourself and practice regularly! All the Masters and real Yogis place their attention on the breath.

In meditation these exercises are called Pranayama exercises.

Pranayama ensures more oxygen to lungs stimulate the hearts. Pranayama tones up kidney and control the functions of the nervous system. Kumbhaka or retention of breath helps the supply of oxygen or exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide thus facilitates better work of lungs and helps the brain to work more efficiently.

The breathing exercises in Qi Gong are based on Taoist breathing methods that focus on Renewing and Restoring the way we breathe to harmonize with nature. These methods focus on creating a circular breath and can be practiced sitting or while doing any of the Energy Arts. The Qigong exercises as well as the sexual magic is based on the breath and the ability to control the breath.

When I was a child, my parents had a swimming pool in the backyard and one of the games we played was to see how many laps we could swim underwater holding our breath. At first, I could only do one length but, by the end of the summer, I got up to 3-1/2 to or 4 lengths holding my breath. Little did I know at the time but I was increasing my lung capacity playing that game. To this day, every time I am in a swimming pool, I dive down to the bottom and swim underwater as many lengths as I can to build up my lungs. When you hold your breath underwater for a long time, you have to use the muscles of the diaphragm — you force oxygen into that lower part of the lungs. This type of breathing allows you to lower your heart rate and reduce the carbon dioxide levels of the body. This will eventually fill every possible space with air and you will be able to hold your breath for a long, long time.

When we practice Qi Gong regularly, we build our breathing capacity, strengthen the lungs, and eliminate the emotions of sadness and grief.
