Don’t let the Holiday Blues get you.

Now we are well fed and ready to continue eating and drinking our way to New Year’s. Is this bad? Emotionally it’s great, delicious, yummy fun, loving, lots of family and friends to share and fight with, but on the other side you’ve filled your body with sugar and fat for just about a month.

SUGAR:
Sucrose (table sugar) is a major part of some of our favorites daytime snacks like cakes and biscuits; sugar provides no nutrition, which is why it is often referred to as ’empty calories’. It also increases  blood glucose levels quickly, which is one of the reasons why people with diabetes are advised to limit their daily intake of sugar.  Saying no to sugar can be difficult, especially if those around you often indulge in sweet food and drinks. The next dangerous culprit is…

FAT:
Fat is the most energy dense nutrient and carries twice as many calories as the same weight of pure carbohydrate. While this doesn’t mean you should avoid fat altogether, you do need to be reasonably aware of how many calories you are taking in when eating high-fat foods such as butter, cheese and cream.  The worst fats are those typically found in processed foods such as ready meals, crisps, pies, cakes and biscuits, so it’s best to limit these foods in your diet.  It’s important to note that taking in excessive fat, if it leads to an excessive calorie intake, will result in increased insulin resistance and therefore higher blood glucose levels.

The holidays are fun for most of us, but watch your diet, drink plenty of water, exercise daily, start your day with a meditation, get out in nature, stay in touch with loved ones and be thankful and grateful.

I wish you the best in your Health, Wealth & Happiness!
