The Power Of Sound.

Last week an old Dharma friend came for a visit. He invited me to an unusual event with a performance by Snatam Kaur Khalsa.

There wasn’t any traditional music, but the concert was most enjoyable, filled with Mantras and Inspirational Music.  I felt a deep sense of Relaxation and Peace as I listened to her sing and the band played, chanting traditional Sacred Mantras that blended Eastern & Western influences, it sure put me in a deep meditative state for well over three hours!

The music brought me back to a time in my life when I lived in Michigan and was totally involved in the 3HO Foundation and practiced Kundalini yoga that was started by Yogi Bhajan.  Listening to her music was an opportunity to awaken the power of mantra and open up all my spiritual centers. To fall in love with mantras and be healed by them is a beautiful thing that opens up your heart and soul! Mantras differ from prayers, as prayer is asking, and mantra is listening to the sound vibration of the Universe.

Mantra is a motivating chant, like the “I think I can, I think I can” you repeat over and over to yourself on the last stretch of every marathon you run. mantra is usually any repeated word or phrase, but it can also refer more specifically to a word repeated in meditation. Mantra comes from a Sanskrit word meaning a “sacred message or text, charm.

Chanting Mantras is a way for people to overcome and find that sense of peace they are looking for!

Snatam Kaur is an American singer, Peace Activist and Author raised in the Sikh and Kundalini Yoga Tradition. She has an amazing ability to transform traditional Sikh chants of India into a Contemporary sound that appeals to the modern ear and awakens an ancient yearning in the Soul! For over twenty years she studied with and grew up in the presence of her spiritual teacher Yogi Bhajan, while he was in his physical form, learning the essence of Naad Yoga. (A form of Yoga focusing on sacred sound). At the core of this practice is an essential experience of peace and healing which has helped her music to be accessible to people of all walks of life.  Whenever you have an opportunity to hear her and the band go and experience an opening in your spiritual growth!

I believe Meditation is an important factor in one’s Healing Practice and growth; Physically, Mentally and Spiritually. That’s the reason why I practice and encourage all my patients and students to learn and keep on practicing meditations to dissolve stress, clear their body and mind of anger, rush and hastiness.
