How to stay out of the Emergency Room

Usually I send medical emergencies to the ER where the folks
with the scalpels and stitches are prepared for anything. Well
almost anything, this was different.

The lesson here is how all of us can use Qi Gong to stay out of
the Emergency Room.

Sometimes the subtle ways of Qi Gong, and Chinese Medicine will
get you out of a crisis way faster than anything western
medicine has to offer.

Did I do the right thing or was I putting my patient at risk?

Here’s what happened.

I was in the office late on Friday night and I received an
emergency call from a patient.

I could hardly understand what she was saying, but since I know
this patient well and trust her judgment in coming to me first,
I told her to come in even though it was after closing hours.

When Silvia arrived she had her mouth wide open and couldn’t
close it at all.

“Ah” was all I said and I smiled as I unlocked the door for her
to come in.

I don’t see this very much of this in south Florida, but when I
was in China we would see patients who had lockjaw just about
daily.

In China there are many probable causes for lockjaw including
infection and each case has to be assessed with great care.

In Silvia’s case the jaw opened and won’t close; it happened
after she yawned.

“Pop” and there she was stuck with her mouth wide open.

The joint pops forward and out of place and won’t go back no
matter what you do, no coaxing, or massaging, or stretching
seems to work.

Not only do you look silly it is very painful too.

In medical terms a Temporomandibular joint disorder or a TMJ
disorder.

You know how freighting this is if you have ever had it happen
to you. You feel helpless and don’t know what to do.

Fortunately the ancient Chinese developed a very specific
treatment to cure Lock Jaw in just a few minutes.

I used a few special acupuncture points to relax the jaw
muscle. Within minutes her jaw relaxed and with a smile on her
face she said thank you very much.

Contrast this Chinese treatment with the Western treatment of a
hypodermic needle to the jaw, a risky adjustment, or even
surgery and I’m sure we would all opt for a few tiny pin pricks
of acupuncture.

Lockjaw or TMJ is an indicator of an overall blockage of the
flow of energy.

Even in the United States it is considered a disorder
transcends the boundaries between several health-care
disciplines including dentistry, neurology, physical therapy,
and psychology.

Many of us experience TMJ or that tight clenching in the jaw
muscles but we overlook it, ignore it, pretend it’s not there
and do nothing about it until something serious happens like
lockjaw.

Silvia not only needed me to fix the immediate problem, she
needed a way to correct the cause of the problem.

The answer is in Qi Gong.

I gave her some prescribed exercises from the Recharging Qi
Gong set to keep her relaxed and tension free. The Instant
Power Reset (IPR) and the Percussive Shoulder drop; you can
find them on page on pages 36-39 of the manual are especially
important for you too if you are experiencing any TMJ.

All of us without exception can avoid trips to the ER if we pay
more attention to our body and respond accordingly.
