When your Cookies get Burnt

Most of us can relate to this, you or maybe your mother
make a batch of cookies, your favorite ones.
The whole house has the smell of fresh baked cookies;
your mouth is watering as they are baking in the oven.
Memories are being triggered left and right.

A smell can bring on a flood of memories; affect your
moods,memory and even your performance.
When we smell something good or bad it call up
memories and powerful responses almost instantaneously.

Our olfactory system triggers the brain that processes
emotion, and is responsible for associative learning.
Our ability to smell is highly linked to memory.
In order to identify a scent, you must remember when you
have smelled it before and then connect it to visual
information that occurred at the same time.

An odor actually increases the vividness and intensity
of that remembered information when you smell that
odor again.
The smell of the oven fresh cookies may remind you
of Christmas, your childhood or another special moment
in your life.

When I prepare myself for meditation I make sure
there are very few distractions before I begin.
The phone is off, no TV or radio and the house is quite.
(The best time is early morning or late evening when
everyone is still).
I begin by lighting one of my favorite incense.
The smell triggers the brain and you will automatically
be put you into a meditative state.
To keep the mind from jumping around like a monkey
a mantra helps to keep you focused and,
you will go into a deeper state of relaxation.
