What Is Spiritual Work and what Will It Do To Me?

What Is Spiritual Work and what Will It Do To Me?

I have been interested in spiritual work since I

Spirit with in was sixteen years old. Not because of my parents

or any religious teaching. In fact, I never liked

anything about religion. Their rules, dogma, or

any other group or organization seemed controlling

to me. I guess you would say I was a rebel in many

ways in my life. I didn’t eat what the other kids

ate, and didn’t go to church, temple, or study

groups. I wasn’t really happy with the way they

ran the school system, and it seemed that most

teachers, priests, rabbi, and religious leaders

just didn’t have the right answers to my young,

inquisitive mind.

My Dad was a thirty-three-degree mason.Free

masonry is a fraternity. It is not a religion or

belief system of any kind. It is, however, a

fraternity that encourages personal and individual

character development and application of moral and

virtuous lessons and behavior into one’s daily

life. A key way in which that is expressed is

through community service and charity. It is not

related to satanism or the occult, although there

are many esoteric rituals that my Dad kept his

ritual work very secret and sacred. I never joined

the masons myself, but I believe it was part of

the foundation of my upbringing.

At sixteen, I met a girl that I really liked. I

borrowed my Dad’s car and went over to her

parents’ house and asked her mother if I could

take her daughter out on a date. I can still hear

her words ringing in my ear. There is no way that

I am going to let my fourteen-year-old daughter

get in a car with you. Although I was

disappointed, I wasn’t about to give up. My new

love told me that her mother made the entire

family take a yoga class every Wednesday night,

and she asked me if I wanted to come to the class.

I had no idea what yoga was, but I was going for

sure just to see my new girl. After a few weeks of

going to class that I really enjoyed, her mother

agreed to let me go out with her daughter. Wow!

That was the start of a long-lasting love and the

beginning of my spiritual practices.

There are three parts to any spiritual practice:

the Teaching, the Teacher, and the Practice. Each

step along the way is as important as the other.
