Be Flexible or you’ll Break

Judy is a special kind of yoga student that most
teachers dread. She has been training for years.
Sometimes, she'll get in two or three yoga classes
a day. The hotter the room, the better. She trains
hard and long. She is really flexible in body but,
as far as her mind, she is stubborn, fixed, and
quite rigid. The other day, I suggested that she
takes a YMCA yoga class or a class of Hatha yoga
to get an alternative picture as to what being
flexible is all about. She said, "I have no
interest in that at all." I also suggested that
she does a Qi Gong class, or maybe Tai Chi, but
again, "NO!" And she added, "I only want to do
what I want to do." It's great to be
strong-willed, but being rigid will cause a
problem sooner or later.

A Japanese proverb states,The bamboo that bends
is stronger than the oak that resists. Be like
the bamboo:
(1) Bend, but don't break. Be flexible, yet stay
firmly rooted.
(2) Remember: What looks weak is strong.
(3) Be always ready.
(4) Unleash your power to spring back.
(5) Find wisdom in emptiness.
(6) Commit to (continuous) growth.
(7) Express usefulness through simplicity.

When you practice an art, no matter if it's oil
painting, pottery, playing an instrument,
practicing martial arts, or doing Qi Gong, you
have to be flexible in body, mind, and spirit. In
the martial arts, we learn to be flexible against
force. This concept is preached from the time you
start to learn from a young white belt all the way
up to black belt.

Be Flexible
It's the same in your practice. No matter if you
are a yoga student or a master of internal
exercises, the key is moderation, flexibility, and
consistency in practice.
