Why The Seasonal Change Affects Your Breath

Why The Seasonal Change Affects Your Breath

It is Fall again, the time when Summer fades away
and Mother Nature starts to close shop in
preparation for the long Winter. In the
Five-Element Theory, this is the time of the Metal
element linked to the lungs and the large
intestine. Surrender/loss, letting go, emptiness,
sorrow, and grief are some of the emotions
associated to the Metal element. When you are
stressed, there is more sadness, weeping and
wailing.

“The deeper that sorrow carves into your being,
the more joy you can contain.” – Kahlil Gibran

When the Metal element is out of balance, life is
not flowing freely with inspiration and the basic
life force. There is an unwillingness to let go of
position, the fear of not having enough while
holding on to what one has. On the positive side,
you have a healthy sense of impermanence,
surrender and letting go. Imbalances in the Metal
element can result in psychological problems like
mental depression. This is often caused by hanging
on to toxic thoughts, or giving too much
significance to complaining about everyday
circumstances. Depression is not a true emotion,
rather, it is a sequential fiction. “I am helpless
and can’t do anything about it.” When depression
is unraveled, balanced anger is also counteracted
and eliminated. I hear this expression from
patients who have recurring bouts of Metal element
imbalances: “I am sad and mad.”

The lungs are the link between the body and mind.
The conscious use of breathing is one of the most
powerful transformational tools available in
medical Qigong. There is a link between the breath
and our emotions. For example, when there is fear,
the organ most effected is the kidney, and the
breathing pattern becomes fast. If the emotion is
sadness or grief, the breath will be choppy and
obstructed. When a person experiences shock, it
affects the heart, and the breath just stops. In
Qigong, the lungs control the body’s Qi, and the
kidneys actually help the lungs regulate the
respiration. When a person comes to my office, and
they are suffering from anxiety and fear, the most
effective treatment is Medical Qi Gong. Now that
we are in the Autumn season, the lungs and kidneys
are the most affected organs to treat.
