Let the Prayer Flags Fly Again

It’s been a year since I have flown the prayer
flags over my home. Prayer flags are inscribed
with auspicious symbols, prayers, and mantras. For
centuries, the Tibetan Buddhists have flown them
outside their homes and places of spiritual
practice for the wind to carry the beneficent
vibrations across the country. They bring
happiness, long life, and prosperity to the one
who flies them and all those in the vicinity.
They convey a feeling of harmony and bring to
mind the precious teachings of the Buddha. The
prayer flag tradition is ancient, dating back
thousands of years in India and to the Shamanistic
Bon tradition of pre-Buddhist Tibet. The flags
balance the elements both internally and
externally. Their 5 colors represent the 5 basic
elements:

• Red for fire
• Yellow for earth
• White for air or metal
• Blue for space and water
• Green for wood

The Unknown.” When they
are around a sick person, it is said to harmonize the
elements in his body to produce a state of physical
and mental health. They were also used to help
appease the local gods and spirits of the mountains,
valleys, lakes, and streams. These elemental beings,
when provoked, were thought to cause natural
disasters and disease. I hope they will move all the
hurricanes away from my door as well as bad storms.

At one time, the writings and images on prayer
flags were painted by hand one at a time. The
vibration of mantra painted on the flags can
control the invisible energies that govern our
true existence. Oftentimes, the mantra, “OM MA NI
PAD ME HUNG” is printed on prayer flags. The
mantra sends blessings of compassion to the six
worldly realms.

I have always hung the prayer flags around my
home, and I look forward to hanging them again at
my new home come September. If you have a place in
your garden, I encourage you to fly the prayer
flags and reap all the benefits.
