The Spirit Behind the New Year

Ah it’s New Year’s Eve, romance, Champagne and
caviar a night of dancing, glitter and sparkle.
Watching the big ball drop in NYC, we set our goals
and ring out the old year and ring in the New – “2013”.

New Years has a spiritual meaning as well,
that sometimes gets over looked.
It’s a time for reflection on the state of one’s soul.
A Time of Rebirth
the turning point of the year,
the birth of the year, the return of the Sun.

The days between Solstice and the New Year are a magical,
radiant time period, when anything is possible.
Known as the 12 Days of Christmas they were
considered omen days, which could be used to predict
the coming year.

The 12 days leading up to New Year’s Day
is a time finishing up projects

•Getting your house together
• Paying bills
•Returning borrowed things
• Reflecting on oneself
•Forgiving others and yourself
• Serving others
•Setting your goals

In some cultures, people jump into the ocean to wash away the old
and start with a clean slate. I’ll do that for sure,
thankfully I live in Florida and it’s still warm.

Whatever traditions you have they should be completed before
midnight on New Year’s Eve.
When I lived in Caracas we would get up on a chair before midnight
and jump into the New Year for good luck
and when ever we celebrated at a Greek restaurant we would break
all the old dishes to clear the past.

Traditionally I start a spiritual chant around 7:O’clock PM
New Years Eve and chant until sunrise to bring in the new
energy and clear the path from any negative influences.

It is said that everything you do on New Year’s Eve and
New Year’s Day is a reflection of the coming year.

Although many of these customs may seem like superstitions,
they all stem from a similar belief.
Ending the old year with respect and beginning the new
one in the way we would like it to begin.

I love New Years because it is a time to reflect on the meaning of our
impermanence on which no human being has control and which none
can ever change. But practices can lead you to escape from negative
energy bring you to a place of bliss.

I wish you a Happy, Prosperous New Year.
