Changing Your View Internally and Externally

Changing Your View Internally and Externally

One of my good friends is traveling to India for
the first time. She is excited and nervous. Taking
a big trip like this for only ten days is like
running up a mountain with a fifty-pound backpack.
Her flight will take at least sixteen hours each
way, not including layovers.

The Indian culture is unique and has its own
values. One of the major differences that can be
seen between American and Indian cultures is in
the family relations. While the Indians are very
much family-oriented, the Americans are
individual-oriented. Americans are more
goal-oriented while the Indians are more
people-oriented. Indians may even forsake their
individual wishes and happiness for the sake of
families. Americans plan things ahead. They
believe in dominating nature and controlling the
environment around them. Indians, on the other
hand, believe in harmonizing with nature. As
Americans, we think of ourselves as individuals of
self-reliance and independence. Indians are more
dependent on others; there is respect for the
elders who are considered as the decision-makers
in the family.

We had dinner last night just a few days before
her trip, and I asked her what she expects to
accomplish on the trip and what treasures she
hopes to find. She looked puzzled at first and,
then said, to see India? I got that, but there is
more to my question. Whenever I travel, no matter
if it’s a trip in the USA, or an international
trip to Europe or China, I always know there is a
lesson to be learned or a treasure to discover
there for me. Sometimes, it is a business
opportunity, a spiritual opening, a health and
longevity experience, or a learning encounter that
changes the path of my entire life. I often spend
weeks, months, or even years planning out a trip,
what I want to accomplish, learn and discover
about myself, my growth and my view of the world.
My friend said, I never thought of what I wanted
to discover about myself, and asked me to explain
more.

“Your vision will become clear only when you look
into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who
looks inside, awakens.” – Carl Jung

There is an ancient formula that touches on every
domain of life; it’s called the “Ba gua or pa
kua,” the eight trigrams used in Taoist cosmology
to represent the fundamental principles of
reality. It consists of three lines, each either
“broken” or “unbroken,” respectively representing
yin or yang. Due to their multilateral structure,
they are often referred to as trigrams. The Bagua
has had correspondences in astronomy, astrology,
geography, geomancy, anatomy, the family, and
everything else. When the world began, there was
heaven and earth. Heaven mated with the earth and
gave birth to everything in the world.

The trigrams are related to the five elements used
by Feng Shui practitioners and in Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM). The five elements are
Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. The Water and
Fire trigrams correspond directly with the Water
and Fire elements. The element of Earth
corresponds with both the trigrams of Earth and
Mountain. The element of Wood corresponds with the
trigrams of Wind and Thunder. The element of Metal
corresponds with the trigrams of Heaven and Lake,
as well as a secret one that opens the spiritual
path similar to the hidden spiritual formula in
the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life.

In the Ba gua, there are eight possible
combinations to render the various trigrams. It
also relates to the Magic Square, the formula to
balance and harmonize all domains of your life,
from your career to your ultimate success in life.
The Magic Square formula has helped to guide us
for thousands of years.
